KOAT TV 7 reporting from our hotel in Albuquerque, NM.

Day 11, Sunday August 5 - Albuquerque, NM.
Today was a free day.  We spent it doing more chores, wash and service vehicles, shopping for supplies, and some touring around town.

Chief William E Craig of the Eddyville, Kentucky Police Dept. and his Dodge Stealth DARE car - Albuquerque, NM.

Day 12, Monday August 6 - Flagstaff, AZ.
KOAT TV channel 7, the ABC affiliate of New Mexico showed up this morning for an interview.  This broadcast will be seen all around the state on the noon and 6pm newscasts.  We met William Craig, Chief of Eddyville, Kentucky Police Department who had planned on joining our event, but due to the D.A.R.E. convention in Los Angeles planned on the same dates, he could not make it.  It was such a nice coincidence that Chief Craig happened to stay in the same hotel as we did and he was able to join us for our drive through the city of Albuquerque.  APD showed up and escorted our group through town.

West of Albuquerque we stopped to pay our respects to State Police officer Lloyd Aragon recently killed in the line of duty by a suspect the NMSP was pursuing at mile 126 on I-40.  The location of this tragedy made the fact more poignant because it happened where the 1930's Route 66 and the 1950's Route 66 alignments intersect. Aragon was the 25th officer killed in the line of duty for the NMSP.  On to Arizona, we stopped and visited the man "Standing on the Corner in Winslow, Arizona."  Such a fine sight to see!  Remember the song by the Eagles, "Take it Easy"  well, the town of Winslow has used this famous line and made a small park in downtown complete with bronze statue of a man standing on the corner with a girl in a flatbed ford, slowing down to take a look at him.

Day 13, Tuesday August 7 - Kingman, AZ.
Breakfast with commander of the ADPS - Flagstaff Office, then on the road to discover hidden sections of Route 66.  In the town of Williams, we visited with Paul and Sandi Taylor of Route 66 Magazine, they took photographs of the cars to include with an article in an upcoming edition. They are also interested in covering next years rally from start to finish.  In Seligman, we stopped at the Snow Cap Drive In and watched as tourists fell prey to Juan Delgadillo's pranks.  This establishment in conjunction with the barber shop next door are famous with all Route 66 travelers.  Back in 1985, when Interstate 40 was opened in nearby Williams, this city virtually died overnight.  Angel Delgadillo, (Juan's brother) decided not to take this sitting down and he fought to have old highway 66 designated as a state highway and later a historic route.  Known by many as the father of 'new' Historic Route 66, Angel Delgadillo has done more to get people (and government) interested in preserving the highway, than anyone else I know of.

After visiting with the folks in Seligman, we continued to Grand Canyon Caverns where we met with the Kingman PD who escorted us in a restored 1954 Chevrolet patrol unit to our Hotel in Kingman.   After getting settled in, we went to a dinner joint-hosted by the Kingman Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau, Arizona Route 66 Association, and the Kingman PD.  Chief Butler gave us a tour of the new police headquarter facilities.

Day 14, Wednesday August 8 - Official End of Tour
Due to events beyond our control, we decided to end our trip one day early and turn back from Kingman. Sometimes the best laid plans can be sidetracked.   From here we will return to Texas and bid farewell to our travel companions on this journey.  Our California delegates continued back to Los Angeles and their story is continued in PART 5 of this report.

We returned with officer Chavarria to the Grand Canyon where we visited the National Park and then were able to enjoy a summer thunderstorm over the south rim.  From here we traveled onto the Navajo reservation and stayed with the fine folks at the Anasazi Inn in Gray Mountain, AZ.  Due to the thunderstorm, all electrical power was out for a couple of hours ... so we registered in the dark.   It's always an adventure out on the Mother Road!
